August Topic: Quick, Cheap, and Now: How Local Groups Are Reshaping San Diego's Streets
Strong Towns San Diego Policy & Research Leader, Kyle Walker, shares a look at low-cost, high-impact street safety projects San Diego groups are already running. We'll hear about the recent North Park quick-build demonstration, led by AARP California, North Park Main Street, America Walks, and Councilmember Whitburn's office and learn how business districts and community groups can participate in or sponsor similar projects through Strong Towns San Diego's Adopt-an-Intersection initiative. Get inspired about how policies supporting small-scale neighborhood entrepreneurship (Home Enterprise Unit proposal) tie street-level safety to the same walkable, locally-supported neighborhoods our members are trying to build.
About our August Guest Speaker
Kyle Walker is a San Diego-born civic organizer and policy strategist focused on how cities grow, spend, and endure. He serves as Policy and Research Lead for Strong Towns San Diego, where he applies a fiscal sustainability lens to local land use, infrastructure, and municipal finance, arguing that incremental, neighborhood-scale development builds more resilient cities than debt-financed expansion. Much of his work centers on strengthening community: creating gathering places, activating public space, and building the local relationships that make neighborhoods durable.
He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Purdue University and an MBA from San Diego State University, and works professionally as a business process analyst designing large-scale operational systems. He also sits on the Navajo Community Planning Group and organizes for ranked choice voting reform. Kyle approaches civic problems as questions of institutional design: the rules and incentives that shape what actually gets built.
